What Is A Kolach?
A kolach is a Czech pastry made of a sweet, yeast dough often filled with fruit or sweetened cheese. In America, a kolach is often called a kolache, which is actually the plural form of the name.
The First Kolach
On August 1st, 1987 the village of Prague, Nebraska celebrated its centennial by honoring their Czech heritage in spectacular fashion: a parade, live Czech music, dancing, and baking the "World’s Largest Kolach". After baking the one-ton pastry, the giant kolach was served to a crowd of around 3,000.

The Kolach Rises Again
After being considered too niche for formal acceptance into The Guinness Book of World Records, the village of Prague set out to break their own record. This time, they wanted to possibly double the size of their kolach, a task they approached with true Czech determination.

Fun Facts
Cherry Pie Filling
250 gallons of cherry pie filling were used in the first attempt at setting the record. When they set out to break their own record, the sides of the kolach had to have extra support to prevent the weight of the filling from pushing out the crust.
The Pan
The 18-foot-diameter pan weighed one ton on it's own!
Donations
The village collected around $4,000 to purchase the ingredients for the second kolach.
